Dr. Bart Vandenberghe, Belgium

Bart Vandenberghe obtained his Master degree in Dentistry at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 2005. He continued his oral imaging training with a Master in Medical Imaging (2007) and a PhD in Medical Sciences (2010) researching 2D and 3D imaging techniques for periodontal diagnosis. For this training, he spent three years in the United States of America as research scholar at Temple University in Philadelphia (2005-2006) and at Tufts University in Boston (2007). Shortly after, he was recruited by the University of Maryland, where he spent more than a year (2007-2008) in the department of Diagnostic Sciences and Pathology as Visiting Assistant Professor.

Bart Vandenberghe was finalist for the Research Award of the International Dentomaxillofacial Radiology Association in 2007 (Beijing, China) and won the second price in 2011 (Hiroshima, Japan). He is author and co-author of numerous international publications as well as reviewer for many international journals and editorial board member of the Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Research. Since 2012 he is member of the central council of the European Academy of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology as chair of the Scientific Committee.

Besides his academic endeavors, he organized a first dental mission for the Tierra Bomba Organization in 2007, where he provided dental care and dental preventive education at the local school on the island of Tierra Bomba, Colombia.

Upon his return to Belgium, he finalized a research grant in 3D Cone Beam imaging and 3D follow-up at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, division of prosthetic dentistry, where he was teaching and integrating novel techniques in the field of digital dentistry (2010-2015). Starting 2011, Bart also founded Advimago, Center for Advanced Oral imaging, in Brussels and its training center for continuing education, Advimago Training Center, where he is teaching Digital Dentistry, advanced CAD/CAM courses and provides elaborate CBCT certification programmes. The state-of-the-art facilities of the clinic are also the research grounds for scientific investigations on 3D image analysis and follow-up and are currently being expanded for increased international education.

Course description:

Over the last 10 years, 3D Cone Beam CT has rapidly gained a central position in dental diagnosis, next to the traditional 2D methods. The last generation of this 3D imaging technology delivers extremely high resolution images at very low dose which opens continuously doors to new indications.
However, as with any radiographic modality, it is extremely important to gain proper knowledge on its use since a certain dose is distributed to the patient. European recommendations have been established following the general principle, ALARA, as low as reasonably achievable, meaning that the CBCT user but also the referring dentist need to be aware of all parameters to improve image quality and dose for each individual clinical case. This means that there is a risk that the final diagnostic outcome may be insufficient, or worse, may be redundant at the expense of the patient.
In addition, even when obtaining high quality and correctly taken 3D images, there is a risk of misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment planning when manipulating such 3D information. Understanding the 3D data file and how to analyze this volume is one of the main pitfalls in the digital treatment workflow of the dental patient. But 3D analysis and 3D diagnosis are merely the first step in the process. Thorough knowledge of technology, including software tools, will enable subsequent virtual planning of the diagnostic case. It is thus necessary for dental practitioners to understand the basic concepts of 3D technology, the generated volumes and the 3D image analysis, which will be explained during this lecture, using several clinical cases.

Course objectives:

• To understand the principles of 3D imaging compared to 2D techniques

• To recognize when to prescribe CBCT scans
• To know how to minimize radiation exposure
• To be able to interpret basic dental CBCT images
• To acquire technical skills on image processing

Hands - on:

Participants will acquire basic diagnostic skill for analysis of dental CBCT volumes, by practicing several clinical cases in a software on computers. Different analysis and segmentation tools will be explained and practiced in the software, including panoramic reconstructions, nerve and tooth segmentation, TMJ and airway analysis, optical scan fusion and implant planning.
